City Employees,
Veterans and Clergy Stand Up for Free Speech
During the recent municipal elections, city workers, veterans, firefighters and members of the clergy called on the city council to take action to protect the right of San Antonio citizens to speak their minds and participate in our democratic process.
The event was organized once SEIU members and veteran groups realized the city was taking away some of the same basic freedoms that American soldiers were fighting to provide the people of Iraq. The city suspended three workers for participating in the democratic process by appearing on a mailer to San Antonio voters.
Rose Araujo-Murray, a 911 operator for nearly 22 years, said she wanted to let voters know about public service workers’ concerns, such as existing staffing shortfalls in 911 services.
"The majority of our jobs are in public service and I thought citizens
needed to know about concerns we have as employees and citizens," she said.
"I should have the right to voice my opinions, my choices, my political
thoughts to the public and to my co-workers on my own time."

"We’re working with the city to take the steps necessary to retain and attract the quality employees needed to ensure public services in all departments.";
