City Employees Helped Elect Six Candidates Who Support Working Families
SEIU members turned out thousands of voters in the city elections this past spring,
securing the election of the six city council members who signed a pledge to
support San Antonio's working families. Two incumbents who refused to
sign the pledge lost their seats.
During the campaign, more than 150 city workers and their families
volunteered to survey their neighbors about concerns related to
city services.
“We asked folks what they wanted to change about the city,” said Rick
Masters, an Environmental Services employee. “Then we encouraged them to
vote in city elections if they really wanted a voice in how this city
functions.”
City workers held neighborhood walks in eight city council districts and
phoned voters across the city. In areas where city employee's concentrated their
efforts, turn-out on Election Day reached historic proportions.
