 Around SEIU

SEIU Texas is part of the Service Employees International Union.  Read about what's happening in SEIU throughout the southwest and the nation:

SEIU Helps Launch New Labor Federation

Building New Strength
Anna Burger, Chair of Change to Win, speaks about restoring the American Dream.
Hundreds of working people from around the country – members of unions that together represent nearly 6 million workers – came together to create a new labor federation dedicated to ensuring that hard work is once again valued in the US and around the world. Change to Win, comprised of 7 unions, will be a lean organization focusing more than 75% of its budget on organizing working people.

Several of the participating unions, including SEIU, left the AFL-CIO earlier this year to build something stronger. “Today we come together, having traveled here on separate roads with our separate proud histories, and our own union’s colors, but we are all going in the same direction now.  We are on the way to rekindle the American dream,” said Anna Burger, Chair of Change to Win.

Thousands of Colorado State Employees Join SEIU

Thousands of Colorado state employees and members of the Colorado Association of Public Employees recently decided to join SEIU to gain the strength needed to improve their jobs and communities. The SEIU members are working together to protect public services, including health care, education, and transportation, from further budget cuts.

Arizona Employees Partner with the City of Chandler

In a move that's expected to ensure reliable public services in the wake of huge population growth, the City of Chandler  and its employees recently signed off on a written agreement that both establishes working conditions and forms the basis of a new partnership. City employees and management will now regularly discuss ways to improve jobs and services.

Chandler City Manager Mark Pentz was among those who were upbeat about the partnership.  "The professionalism and open communication exhibited to date has shown that we all recognize that this is a positive step for our employees and the community,” he said.

Nearly 50,000 Child Care Providers Choose SEIU to Improve Services for 200,000 Children

Victory Fuels National Movement
More than half a million child care providers are working to unite for improved services for children.

Illinois home child care providers recently voted overwhelmingly (82%) to join SEIU.

“This is a big step toward winning improved rates and health coverage to make child care a stable job for adults so we can provide consistent care for children," said Angenita Tanner, a home child care worker in Chicago (pictured above, speaking at a press conference).

The home child care vote is the largest union election in Illinois history and one of the largest in U.S. history. In recent decades, only the vote by 74,000 home care workers in Los Angeles to join SEIU in 1999 saw more workers unite in a single union election.

Uniting Our Strength to Win Big

Recognizing that the global economy and the corporate structures of our employers require a new interdependence among local unions, SEIU member delegates to our 2004 International Convention decided to:

  • Devote more time and resources to help unite workers in the South and Southwest to raise standards for all working families.
  • Build more strength for workers in SEIU's core industries–Health Systems, Long–Term Care, Public Services, and Building Services.
  • Launch unionwide strategic programs that cross divisions so that we can win even more for SEIU members.
  • Confront the challenges presented by globalization and by the decline of other unions.

Working together, SEIU members are improving the lives of working families:
